Design School is Canva’s product and design education platform helping Canva reach millions of new and existing users around the world. It’s a place people come to learn how to use the product, design fundamentals, and practical skills to grow their business or build their brand.


The Design School team create and localize content across a variety of formats including video courses, interactive tutorials, webinars and live events. Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned design pro, you can find engaging, inspiring, and educational content from Canva Design School.

challenge

The existing Design School brand was fragmented across the content formats and lacked a consistent look and feel without a master brand. Due to localization, assets leaned heavily on illustrations, stock imagery, and footage, making it difficult to scale quickly and keep designs looking fresh.

opportunity

An elevated and professional brand identity was developed, inspired by Canva’s visual language and UI. We simplified complex design concepts and developed an approachable, bold, and flexible design system to hold copy, UI flows, templates, images, videos, and textures.


This brand system enables the team to efficiently produce content for over 30 countries and help to position Design School as leaders in design education

universal language

Using simple shapes and Canva's UI, we created a library of universal language. The shapes and frames can be used to simplify and explain complex design concepts like contrast, alignment, and color theory, as well as collaboration, and how to use templates.

Intro Animation & sonic branding

The intro animation is used to create a sense of consistency across all videos and grow brand recognition. The motion is a representation of the spectrum of content on offer. From design theory topics like contrast and colour theory to Canva product features like the video editor and background remover.


The sonic identity developed in partnership with Resonance, was a mix of the familiar percussion and vocals used in the core brand, with a synthy-tech overtone, a nod to the Canva product.


We acknowledge Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of country throughout Australia. Our Sydney studio sits on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation and we pay our respects to their elders past, present, and emerging.
